Top Tips for Decorating Loft Conversions

When it comes to decorating a loft conversion, one thing needs to be kept in mind: space. Although lofts come in all shapes and sizes, the majority will have space in limited supply. Decorating a loft in a way that utilises the amount of available space will provide the best results. Here at Kingsmead Conversions we’re going to help you plan the finishing touches to your loft conversion with our top decorating tips.

Colour

Many fashion and design outlets are touting rich, bright and bold colour palettes as the ‘in’ trend of 2019 —  but hold up with your paint brushes! While many people like to follow the latest trends, it’s important to consider how colours will affect the feel of your loft. Dark or saturated colours can make the room feel more cramped, in contrast to light, pale colours that provide the room with an airy, spacious feel. Pantone’s colour of the year for 2019 is ‘living coral’, which is a good example of a suitable loft colour.

Another pro-tip that is especially helpful if your loft has low ceilings, is to paint your walls and ceiling the same colour. This will seemingly remove the border between ceiling and wall, removing the appearance of a low ceiling and therefore making the loft appear more spacious.

Mirrors

Mirrors take up very little room, and yet their introduction can give the illusion of a much larger space. We highly recommend the use of mirrors to decorate a loft. You can get mirrors in a huge variety of styles, and so their inclusion can fit in with almost any theme or design style.

Furniture

Low, sloped ceilings won’t work well with tall furniture. Using a lot of tall furniture will make low ceilings more apparent and the room feel cramped. We’d recommend using compact furniture to help balance out the room height.

Light

The right lighting can make a world of difference to the ambience of a loft. Artificial lighting can be handy; bedside lamps can help with reading and are available in an endless list of colours, styles and designs. However, we believe artificial light should only be a supplement to natural light. Aside from the wealth of health benefits that natural light brings, windows — especially Velux skylight windows — take up next to no space, compared to dangling light fixtures.
